PROJECT OVERVIEW
Social Distancing Edition – Addition!
We had a little fun with this ribbon cutting event soon after the initial lockdown in 2020. Fortunately everyone on this project stepped up in a big way to finish the job and allow this family to work peacefully from home (and maybe get a little school work done!)
DESIGN AND LAYOUT
The task for this Design was expanding the living area and remodeling the kitchen while providing a more open concept. This meant removing the rear wall of the home and arranging the windows and door to accommodate these changes. Many factors are considered when removing the rear wall of a home and the load bearing point in the kitchen was a major factor in the overall layout as we incorporated large beams into the aesthetics. By wrapping these beams and staining them with a rich finish we were able to contrast the lighter wood while complimenting the original stained woodwork. Also original to the home are two bookcases which accented woodwork and enclosed a mechanical pipe into the second floor. The decision was made to change the orientation of the bookcases and create open shelves for a drybar with shelving. In doing so we were able to tie in accents from the kitchen shelving with custom fabricated doors for the bookshelves transforming them into “cabinets”
STYLE AND FINISHES
Classic white subway backsplash and gray cabinetry allow for the natural wood tones in the flooring and woodwork to stand out. The pendants above the island are a perfect fit with the metal accents that are also in the kitchen shelving, drybar, and built-in shelving adjacent to the rear door. Black accents rounded out the whole look, we have black cabinet hardware and simple 12×12 matte black tile in the kitchen. Opting for the black stainless steel sink was an excellent way to use the appliances as functional accent pieces in this layout. The bar shelving is 5/4 white oak with custom black pipe and fittings installed to match the kitchen black pipe and fittings in the other shelving areas. The shelving in the rear foyer is installed above the bench and next to the cabinetry to allow extra space for shoes, bookbags and additional shelf space. Pendants above the island tie in nicely with the light above the custom kitchen table fabricated off site for this family.
